{"id":5253,"date":"2020-12-21T12:19:25","date_gmt":"2020-12-21T19:19:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/?p=5253"},"modified":"2022-12-13T09:37:04","modified_gmt":"2022-12-13T16:37:04","slug":"christmas-joy-mourning","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/faith\/christmas-joy-mourning\/","title":{"rendered":"Christmas Joy &#038; Mourning"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"notes\" style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:0.9em;\">Reprinting some of our best holiday pieces from Christmas past.<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Many have died this year. And with daily tallies, death has never seemed to loom so large over the living quite like it does in 2020. My brother died this year. His <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">mortal life was short\u201440 years old\u2014but it was rich, full, and deep. So, it\u2019s perhaps fitting this year I\u2019ve found solace in one of the shortest verses of all the gospels.<br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Only two words: \u201cJesus wept.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">You\u2019ll remember that soon after that verse, the Savior\u2019s preternatural, divine powers eventually raise Lazarus from the dead. But in those words\u2014a single pronoun and a single verb\u2014the gospel author shows us that Christ mourned with Mary first.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mary\u2019s brother, after all, had died. She was inconsolable and fell at the Savior\u2019s feet, crying, \u201cLord, if thou hadst been here, my brother had not died.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The master\u2019s first response? Tears.<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>Someday we all will witness and rejoice when the dead come forth.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will, my brother, is dead. Tears have been inevitable this year. Christ we read, \u201cgroaned in the spirit\u201d when he encountered Mary in mourning. We can\u2019t help but do the same when we lose someone close to us in this life\u2014a sibling, a parent, a friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But, although tears were the Savior\u2019s first response, the scriptural narrative doesn\u2019t end there. Upon seeing Lazarus\u2019 tomb, Christ declares: &#8220;take ye away the stone.\u201d Martha, Mary\u2019s sister, reflexively reminds him that her brother has been dead for four days. But the Savior persists, declaring: \u201cLazarus, come forth.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I have mourned my dead brother, and before him, my dead father\u2014and it\u2019s right to mourn\u2014but, Christmas\u2014the season of Christ\u2014is a reminder that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">someday we all will witness and rejoice when the dead come forth<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">; the Lord in his unstinting mercy and grace can cast aside any stone that impedes their progress. And when they are ready, at the appropriate time, the Lord will call their names.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cThe spirits of all,\u201d we read in the scriptures, \u201cas soon as they are departed from this mortal body \u2026 are <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/#note11c\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">taken<\/span><\/a> <a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/#note11d\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">home<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to that God who gave them life\u201d (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/40?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Alma 40:11<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There, in the world beyond, my brother Will\u2014alongside your own loved ones too\u2014continues to move forward; to serve others; to learn; to grow. The dead cultivate the same fellow feelings and sociality we enjoy here. Our dead, we believe in the Latter-day Saint tradition, are asked at certain moments to lend a hand to us who still remain to navigate mortality; they provide comfort during times of acute trial and at moments when the veil is thin, between heaven and earth, we sense their presence.<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p><\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The tears will represent a super-abundance of unending gain.<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><br \/>\n<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And someday I will see Will again. And the grand sum of all of Christmas\u2019 meaning is that I won\u2019t see him the way I did on the day his casket was closed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, this time he\u2019ll stride forward. His gait will still be unmistakable. I\u2019ll recognize his magnetic smile. He will stand tall and unfettered; I will see him eye to eye. And I will weep again. But this time there will be no loss; <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the tears will represent a super-abundance of unending gain.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No more death counts on the news. Just eternal communion. Jesus told Martha, \u201cYour brother will rise again.\u201d Martha replied, \u201cI know that he will rise again in the resurrection at the last day.\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Jesus then stated: \u201cI am the resurrection and the life. He who believes in Me, though he may die, he shall live. And whoever lives and believes in Me shall never die.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">My brother Will is not lost. Nor is your loved one.
