{"id":4881,"date":"2020-11-18T14:35:34","date_gmt":"2020-11-18T21:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/?p=4881"},"modified":"2023-08-09T11:34:36","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T17:34:36","slug":"stop-deleting-your-facebook","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/media-education\/stop-deleting-your-facebook\/","title":{"rendered":"Stop Deleting Your Facebook"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Have you heard the news?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s happened again.\u00a0 In your own neighborhood.\u00a0 With someone in another family just like yours.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Pushed to the brink.\u00a0 Unable to go on the same any longer.\u00a0 Unable to endure the vitriol, the anger, the preening comparisons, and the nonsense.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Until that person felt there was no other way. And so&#8230;they did it.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">They deleted their Facebook account.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Can you really blame them?\u00a0 When was the last time you spent an hour on social media and came away saying to yourself, <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cAhhh, I feel so much better now about my life!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the first study to quantify the effect of Facebook on everyday life, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/pubmed\/28093386\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">researchers from Yale and the University of California<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> monitored actions of over 5,000 adults across two years (between 2013 and 2015) doing what we do on social media\u2014clicking, liking, updating statuses, scrolling\u2014 while also tracking a range of measures of life satisfaction, emotional health, and even body mass index.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The result? Overall, they found that \u201cwhile real-world social networks were positively associated with overall wellbeing,\u201d the use of Facebook was \u201cnegatively associated with overall wellbeing.\u201d\u00a0 This was especially the case, they noted, when it came to mental health.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Well, there we have it, right? What more do you need to hear?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It is not to a Great Comfort that disciples of Jesus Christ have been called.\u00a0 It is to a Great Commission.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How about <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/prophets-and-apostles\/unto-all-the-world\/to-sweep-the-earth-as-with-a-flood?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">this from Elder David A. Bednar<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speaking to an audience of Latter-day Saints in 2014:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What has been accomplished thus far&#8230;communicating gospel messages through social media channels is a good beginning\u2014but only a small trickle. I now extend to you the invitation to help transform the trickle into a flood. Beginning at this place on this day, I exhort you to sweep the earth with messages filled with righteousness and truth\u2014messages that are authentic, edifying, and praiseworthy\u2014and literally to sweep the earth as with a flood.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It&#8217;s not just Christians, of course, that have things of great worth to share with the world.\u00a0 Imagine what would happen if <a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/editorials\/why-persuasion-shouldnt-be-a-dirty-word\/\">everyone had a chance to share<\/a> what they found to be good, true and beautiful with the world?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We do believe that Christians have a special responsibility to share a special message, though.\u00a0 And in view of that, it&#8217;s not to a Great Comfort that disciples of Jesus Christ have been called.\u00a0 It is to a Great Commission<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014reiterated to multiple people in multiple places and times, but most famously to eleven apostles on a mountain in Galilee <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/matthew\/28-19.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">where the resurrected Lord said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Go ye therefore, and teach [or \u201cmake disciples of\u201d] all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father, and of the Son, and of the Holy Ghost, teaching them to observe all things whatsoever I have commanded you.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How are we to do this?\u00a0 The same as disciples from the beginning\u2014<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">in any way we possibly can.\u00a0 <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In summarizing their own efforts to fulfill this same command, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/26?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Sons of Mosiah report in the Book of Mormon<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have come, and been forth amongst [the people they hoped to teach]&#8230;.yea, we have traveled from house to house&#8230;And we have entered into their houses and taught them, and we have taught them in their streets; yea, and we have taught them upon their hills; and we have also entered into their temples and their synagogues and taught them.\u00a0<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For most of human history, this was the only way to share the message of Jesus Christ.\u00a0 House by house.\u00a0 Door by door.\u00a0 Occasionally in a synagogue\u2014or perhaps standing on<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a wall in the city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would these disciples have thought about standing out on a Facebook wall?\u00a0 Would they have scoffed and turned away in disgust at the vitriol that some people post back in response?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That certainly didn\u2019t <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/26?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop them in real life<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have been patient in our sufferings, and we have suffered every privation&#8230;We have been cast out, and mocked, and spit upon, and smote upon our cheeks; and we have been stoned, and taken and bound with strong cords, and cast into prison; and through the power and wisdom of God we have been delivered again.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of this sounds fun.\u00a0 So, why keep at it when so much nonsense comes back at you?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Because of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the one <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">you might still reach, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/26?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">as they went on to say<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cAnd we have suffered all manner of afflictions, and all this, that perhaps we might be the means of saving some soul.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As elaborated in other Latter-day scripture, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/dc-testament\/dc\/18?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Lord told the early Saints<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, \u201cIf it so be that you should labor all your days in crying repentance unto this people, and bring, save it be one soul unto me, how great shall be your joy with him in the kingdom of my Father!\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Cannot this kind of sharing best happen one-by-one, and especially face-to-face?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, it can! And should. However we can reach others in need around us, we should try.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But how are we to find those in need?\u00a0 And in what ways can we best determine what it is people are seeking for and what is on their hearts?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are the age-old questions\u2014questions about which our new-fangled tech (for all its flaws and gaping misapplications) has something important to say.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if, rather than just scrolling our news feed for any new titillating factoid or entertaining soundbyte, we were looking for something very different?\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What if, rather than approaching social media to compare our own life negatively to whatever we see, our eyes were trained and hearts focused on discerning something else?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Signs of need. Or suffering. An openness. Or an opportunity.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">To support.\u00a0 To encourage.\u00a0 To love.\u00a0 To lift.\u00a0 To teach.\u00a0 To share.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">that\u2019s <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">what we were looking for on social media\u2014rather than mere distraction or entertainment\u2014do we really think that engagement would harm our mental health?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">No, it wouldn\u2019t.\u00a0 (Nor was that what participants were doing in the aforementioned study).<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Within certain bounds, this kind of engagement might lift our spirits\u2014and who knows, might even make a difference for someone else?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This doesn\u2019t mean, of course, that we need to become \u201csocial media experts or fanatics\u201d as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/prophets-and-apostles\/unto-all-the-world\/to-sweep-the-earth-as-with-a-flood?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elder Bednar cautioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014adding, \u201cwe do not need to spend inordinate amounts of time creating and disseminating elaborate messages.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">He went on to cite <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/broadcasts\/article\/ces-devotionals\/2014\/01\/be-still-and-know-that-i-am-god?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President M. Russell Ballard who likewise cautioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201chandheld devices, such as smartphones, are a blessing, but they can also distract us from hearing the \u2018still, small voice.\u2019 They need to be our servants, not our masters.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Bottom line:\u00a0 Not all activity on Facebook is the same\u2014something President Ballard went on to underscore by the following illustration: \u201cFor example, if later tonight you share inspiring thoughts from this devotional on social media, your smartphone is a servant. If you randomly surf the Internet, your smartphone is a master.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While certainly we can all share goodness in other ways\u2014through a text, a call, an email, a knock on the door, these things need not be in opposition to sharing online.\u00a0 On the contrary, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/ministering\/what-is-ministering?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">new efforts to minister in the Church of Jesus Christ have underscored a spectrum of ways<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> to connect, support, and minister &#8211; with online touchpoints often leading to in-person opportunities (and vice-versa\u2014with in-person opportunities often followed-up on more easily online).\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In-person and virtual communication can thus become complementary methods to achieve the same thing&#8230;especially when held in balance.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But rather than calling on people to reject and forsake social media, what have prophetic leaders invited <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and modeled in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">their<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> own<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lives<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">?<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In fairness, that balance can be hard to come by. And it\u2019s also true that the addictive, entertaining-elements of social media <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threatened to eclipse meaningful activities in people\u2019s lives, as attested by other studies. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/broadcasts\/article\/ces-devotionals\/2014\/01\/be-still-and-know-that-i-am-god?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Ballard went on to raise concern<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201cexcessive text messaging, Facebooking, tweeting, and Instagramming are replacing talking\u2014talking directly one to another and talking in prayer with our Heavenly Father and thinking about the things that matter most in life.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But rather than calling on people to reject and forsake social media, what have prophetic leaders invited <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/prophets-and-apostles\/unto-all-the-world\/social-media-and-the-brethren?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and modeled in their own lives<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">? <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0To use these channels in a Godly way, with a laser-focus on achieving inspired, uplifting purposes.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">After explaining how missionaries were sent on sailing ships in the 1830s, then steamships in the 1860s, and airplanes in the 1960s, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/broadcasts\/article\/ces-devotionals\/2014\/01\/be-still-and-know-that-i-am-god?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Ballard explains<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: \u201cThe Church has always adopted advances in technology to help push the work of the Lord forward.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will you as well? Don\u2019t feel bad if you feel great hesitancy in saying yes. For instance:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are one of the many with an unhealthy relationship with social media, by all means, take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechurchnews.com\/living-faith\/2018-06-06\/experts-weigh-in-on-why-you-should-accept-president-nelsons-challenge-and-offer-tips-for-success-10930\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detox, a fast, a vacation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for as long as you need.\u00a0 But don\u2019t stay away forever. (And if you\u2019ve deleted, consider coming back again.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re one for whom social media has fed unhealthy obsessions or cravings\u2014even tempting you to initiate toxic relationships\u2014put in place strict safeguards, perhaps a joint account with someone else you trust and love.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you\u2019re one for whom social media has become a nexus of toxic social comparison\u2014and a regular way to \u201cgrind down\u201d your own self-esteem\u2014use this as an opportunity to step back and consider seriously what and where your worth comes from.\u00a0 As you do so, reconsider what relationship you want to have with social media\u2014and how exactly you want to engage it.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are one of the many, who, according to research from Deloitte, open Facebook first thing in the morning\u2014as soon as they turn off their mobile alarm\u2014before they even get out of bed, reconsider the proper time and place for when to engage in social media. Ask yourself who you want your first interactions of the day\u2014and last interactions at night\u2014to be?\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The risks and dangers of social media are real\u2014especially in excessive, unbounded, unguided ways (which is how, let\u2019s be honest, Americans mostly use social media).\u00a0 Our own <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/covering-the-coverage\/media-reaches-for-easy-hits-on-high-councilors-arrest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Cunningham cautioned a year ago<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the strong pull of our surrounding culture to make\u00a0 \u201cpeeping Toms\u201d of all of us, as we look in on people\u2019s lives with obsessive fascination\u2014\u00a0 alternatively craving aspects of someone else\u2019s lives and then \u201creveling in another person\u2019s sin, crimes, escapades or misery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t have to be how we act though!\u00a0 Because, after all, true disciples have always aspired to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/1_corinthians\/13-6.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">follow Paul\u2019s counsel to<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201cRejoice not in iniquity (wrong-doing, injustice, sin, evil)\u201d but to instead \u201crejoice in the truth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A truth so precious that it\u2019s worth every sacrifice to share, to anyone who will listen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anywhere.\u00a0 Including online.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That won\u2019t make sharing online any easier\u2014especially amidst the cultural and political turmoil around us.\u00a0 As one of our own loved ones said recently, \u201cThere is almost no way to say anything on Facebook without creating contention. I feel checkmated in my hopes of doing good on social media.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We close this article with a short-list of our own general, but practical, suggestions, based on our combined experience as Public Square staff, on how to \u201c<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">do something good<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d through social media:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Careful boundaries.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Be conscientious of the time and place you engage in something like Facebook:\u00a0 Not at work, school, or Church.\u00a0 Not when around children.\u00a0 And not right before bed\u2014or first thing in the morning. Fight (hard) to preserve times in which your attention is needed for present commitments and people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Be proactive more than reactive.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rather than spending your time on Facebook just reacting to what others say, consider planning out (and maybe writing out) what you want to share before even going on the platform, as well as individuals you want to contact <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">before<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> scrolling any news or messages that have come in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Healthy expectations of response.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Don\u2019t impose on yourself unrealistic expectations of responding to every message or response that comes.\u00a0 While doing your best to listen to what others are saying, it\u2019s not necessary to respond, address, validate, and moderate everything that happens. So, don\u2019t try!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Don\u2019t take disagreement personally. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone shares another perspective (or even a critique of what you\u2019ve said), practice taking a breath and \u201csitting with the discomfort\u201d in a way that lets you hear what they are trying to say.\u00a0 Is there anything in what they are sharing that you can appreciate or validate?\u00a0 Start there.\u00a0 If you choose to respond, thank them for being willing to share another perspective, and point out what you find helpful about it.\u00a0 Then share, even just briefly, what else their thought brings to mind. (If a back-and-forth ensues, remember you can choose to follow it further if it\u2019s helpful\u2014or move on, and not feel pressured to continue it.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Block toxic voices anytime you need. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone shows up not interested in real conversation, and (clearly) only wanting to attack, don\u2019t feel bad about blocking them from your page.\u00a0 You can also choose to hide their posts but stay friends. Be careful not to over-interpret honest disagreement as an \u201cattack.\u201d This is about protecting your page from haters\u2014not manicuring it towards ideological uniformity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Embrace pluralism and healthy contestation.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Embrace the pluralism of our public spaces\u2014and commit to be a part of it, however challenging, scary, and exhilarating it can all be.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\"><b>Take regular social media sabbaths, vacations, and daily pauses.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a week, we have found it helpful to take a complete and total break from social media for a full day (like Sunday)\u2014along with similar breaks on a daily basis.\u00a0 Try to reserve first thing in the morning or the last thing at night\u2014the bookends of your day\u2014for the people most important in your life, including God.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p> More and more of our friends and family are opting out of social media entirely.
