{"id":18484,"date":"2023-01-02T02:00:12","date_gmt":"2023-01-02T09:00:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/?p=18484"},"modified":"2024-01-12T11:01:19","modified_gmt":"2024-01-12T18:01:19","slug":"where-have-all-the-truth-tellers-gone","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/dialogue\/where-have-all-the-truth-tellers-gone\/","title":{"rendered":"Where Have All the Truth Tellers Gone?"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"notes\" style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:0.9em;\">Photo by Tingey Injury Law Firm on Unsplash<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I was disappointed to learn recently that \u201cgaslighting\u201d is Merriam-Webster\u2019s <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.merriam-webster.com\/words-at-play\/word-of-the-year\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">word of the year for 2022<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For those unfamiliar, the term derives from a play (and later, movie) in which a woman notices that the old mansion\u2019s gas lights occasionally flicker. She tells her husband, but he writes off her concerns as delusional, leading her to question her sanity. The movie goes on like this until suddenly it is revealed that her husband was playing with the gas line all along\u2014with the precise intent to make her question her grasp on reality. The term has shifted in meaning to include much more\u2013perhaps most especially some kind of a denial of one\u2019s experience.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Friend: Did you know that &#8220;gaslighting&#8221; is the word of the year?<br \/>\nMe: No, I didn&#8217;t. That&#8217;s dumb. I hate that word.<br \/>\nF: Oh, have I told you my favorite gaslighting joke? You&#8217;ll love it.<br \/>\nM: No!<br \/>\nF: Yes I have.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Benjamin Pacini (@benjaminpacini) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/benjaminpacini\/status\/1597455797231169536?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 29, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The term can be overused, of course. And I do worry about the linguistic creep. But I\u2019d like to vote that we bracket that particular culture war for now.\u00a0 I\u2019ve occasionally had reason to question my sanity, for one thing (thanks Twitter). But there\u2019s also an important opportunity here, and it\u2019s one we\u2019d best not miss.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Better Than \u201cNot Gaslighting.\u201d <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We have the bad habit of <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/medium.com\/@bpacini\/do-not-ring-the-bell-55b770054e17\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">narrating the negative<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> these days. \u2018Don\u2019t do this.\u2019 \u2018Don\u2019t do that.\u2019\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Don\u2019t be toxic. Don\u2019t gaslight.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I wrote recently on the topic of\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/sexuality-family\/generational\/the-case-for-heroic-masculinity\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">toxic masculinity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. My point, basically, is that we spend a lot of time pointing to the \u201cstop being toxic!\u201d poster instead of narrating the positive. Let\u2019s do a thought experiment: can you think of someone acting in a toxic way lately? Now, can you think of someone who you would point out as a good example of masculinity? I\u2019d bet the positive examples are harder to find than the negative ones.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Same goes for truth-telling.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Do we really think the best we can aim for is \u201cnot-toxic?\u201d Or \u201cnot-gaslighting?\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The deck is stacked against us. We\u2019ve got to contend against negativity bias in ourselves and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/freakonomics.com\/podcast\/why-is-u-s-media-so-negative\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">negativity in the media<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0too. If it bleeds, it leads, indeed.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">So, let me try to do the opposite. What would the inverse of gaslighting be? Let me offer a working definition\u2014it\u2019s not perfect, but it\u2019s useful. I think of libel, calumny, gossip, and others. The key difference between these close cousins is that gossip, libel, and calumny all target a person\u2019s reputational standing while gaslighting is meant to torture the person herself. It\u2019s a particularly nasty kind of harm-by-falsehood, so I don\u2019t think it\u2019s wrong to let her lead the dodgy group.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would the other categories be labeled? When I think of \u201ctruths-that-harm,\u201d prosecutors come to mind. It\u2019s not all bad, of course: we need a stalwart group of litigants who point fingers at the bad guys.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But I\u2019m reminded of something my friend <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/nauvooneighbor.org\/2022\/08\/20\/accusation-the-epistemology-of-hell\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Dan Ellsworth recently<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> taught me: in restorationist scripture, Lucifer is always \u201cthe accuser,\u201d while his foil is always \u201cCounselor\u201d or \u201cAdvocate with The Father.\u201d In a legal sense, Satan is the prosecutor, while Jesus is the defense attorney. There is no doubt that we need some amount of justice, of course, but there\u2019s a difference between accusation done to reform, to restore, or to ensure justice and accusation that is simply an outgrowth of cynicism and rage\u2014what Dan calls \u201cthe epistemology of hell.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This is\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accusation<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">: is the domain of certain journalists, leakers, and prosecutors\u2014whose goal isn\u2019t some abstract societal welfare at all. Their motivation is just to score a hit on their personal target. Recently, China\u00a0<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/12\/25\/asia\/china-covid-cases-publishing-nhc-intl\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stopped reporting Covid numbers<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. I can understand why. Their numbers weren\u2019t reliable, to begin with; they only served to embarrass the regime. Put bluntly, the numbers were lies. More specifically, they were <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lies intended to protect\u00a0<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">a reputation, an organization, or some \u201cgreater good.\u201d This is the domain of unethical\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public relations<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s a variant here that is worth mentioning: \u201clies that feel good.\u201d This is what every bad therapist does, what every coddling mother, every unethical PR publicist, and every C-suite yes-man does too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A patient comes to the doctor and says, \u201cI am depressed! Cure me! Pleasant fictions, hurry!\u201d The doctor wisely replies, \u201cWe will administer a double dose of unpleasant realities!\u201d<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s call these \u201cbad PR,\u201d but if you want to go with \u201cthe fantasies that enable our worst delusions,\u201d that probably works fine too.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><picture><source hilarity of the joke is that CBT is when you interrogate what you believe. It\u2019s literally truth meant to help. It\u2019s a way to not believe yourself\u2014and sometimes that is\u00a0<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">precisely the healthiest possible path.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We need societal CBT. We need to put our thoughts on trial and have methods for prosecuting them, rationally and deliberately and with the intent to help and not harm.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That\u2019s what journalists once did.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There were others. Some politicians were brave enough, once. Religions might argue about metaphysics, but their real domain was moral truth-telling: indicting the conscience of the parishioners, if never without compassion. Their goal was to build better disciples.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Doctors would tell it to you plain\u2013though bedside manner was crucial; therapists would aim for \u201caccurate-and-also-kind\u201d rather than \u201cpreserve-relationship-at-all-costs.\u201d School teachers and academics both felt that their obligation was to kindly shoot down bad ideas, not propagate trendy ones.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Ode to the Absent Truthtellers. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019m not mad at therapists, nor at journalists, or at prosecutors. I want to be very clear about that. Rather, I am frustrated by a double-sin on the part of <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">some<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0of them, though.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And frankly, all of us.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll take journalists for a moment. They\u2019re happy to engage in \u201cenabling delusions\u201d for their own side and \u201caccusations\u201d on the other. It\u2019s not about truth anymore. It\u2019s what Twitter personality Gurwinder calls \u201cpost-journalism.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">27. Postjournalism:<br \/>\nThe press lost its monopoly on news when the internet democratized info. To save its business model, it pivoted from journalism into tribalism. The new role of the press is not to inform its readers but to confirm what they already believe.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Gurwinder (@G_S_Bhogal) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/G_S_Bhogal\/status\/1596261199636725760?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The same is true of therapists who say nice things to their clients rather than push them to confront their problems. I think, here, of a quote I recently read (but cannot find) about Jung: that where everyone else was whispering pleasantries and fantasies, he took his clients by the neck and plunged them directly into their depression\u2014forcing them to confront it.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here\u2019s the double-sin: I don\u2019t like the negativity, I don\u2019t like the accusation, and I don\u2019t like the unethical PR and the anesthetic delusions. But the grand tragedy is that journalism no longer lives up to its courageous heritage of truth-telling. Yes, the bad, but also the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack-of-good.<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Similarly, it bothers me when I hear politicians engage in populist red-meatery, but in addition to the lies, there\u2019s also the minor detail of the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">lack of truth.<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0In the same way, it bothers me when I hear therapists say pleasant falsehoods\u2014both because lies are bad but also because telling lies prevents the telling of necessary truths.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We live in a land filled with too many lies, yes\u2014too much confusion, too many wacky ideas, too much ideological pornography.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But we also live in a land with too little truth.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Confelicity and Synopsis. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On Christmas, I saw this tweet (yes, I\u2019m publicly confessing to being on Twitter on Christmas \u2026 the shame). I found it quite tender.<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Word of (every) Christmas Day is \u2018confelicity\u2019: joy in the happiness of others.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Susie Dent (@susie_dent) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/susie_dent\/status\/1474643567092158465?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 25, 2021<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Confelicity seems related to \u201csynopsis\u201d to me. Synopsis means to \u201csee together.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">And the best definition of synopsis I can think of is from a Brandon Sanderson novel.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cSkyward\u201d contains a story about a race of aliens called \u201cDiones,\u201d who reproduce by joining together\u2014very literally. They combine. The two cease to be two and become one. When two parents decide that a combination of the two parents would be an ideal future child, they become a new being. First, however, each set of parents joins together tentatively in \u201cdraft\u201d form. Two brains, two sets of eyes and ears, but in one body; they begin to become one but can still separate if the pairing is not a good match.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">(I do not remember how Sanderson deals with the necessary decline of population that results from each generation halving over time, which suddenly bothers me more than it ought to.)<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Now I don\u2019t mean to spoil anything here, but suffice it to say that there are advantages to having two sets of eyes in one being: you can see reality more clearly than your solitary wingmates. Like bifocals, the two together create depth. They can see more than they could if they were alone.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We see more clearly when we see together\u2014so long as those we see with are trying to see what is true.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s a stunning depiction of marriage. My wife is like that to me. She reminds me of what is real when I begin to believe my own eccentricities. I think you have friends like that too\u2014those who are dear to you, who keep your feet on the floor. A friend of mine explained that for her, it is her twin sister:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\" data-conversation=\"none\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">I\u2019m not married, but I have had the same best friend <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/alisonwestt?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">@alisonwestt<\/a> for two decades. She keeps me sane. I like to joke that she solves all my problems bc she\u2019s half my common sense. I think it works bc she knows me well enough to know in which ways I tend to think irrationally.<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Olivia West (@oliviawest0) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/oliviawest0\/status\/1597656370047639552?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">November 29, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Tying ourselves to another\u2014and to a community\u2014helps us to see what they see. So long as the community is good and decent, we will see clearer and crisper; but if the community is deranged or myopic, then we will see with them. This is the problem with social media: not that it lets us raise our voices, but that it swallows up our voices in a sea of tribes.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I had a moment-of-doubting-reality recently, and it was a friend\u2014and one that did not agree with me on the matter at hand, nor one with whom I am particularly close\u2014who spoke up and brought reality back. I wasn\u2019t nuts. I owe that friend. I need a better, catchier word for someone who confirms reality for you like that. Truth-teller will have to do for now.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope I can do that for others some time. I think that\u2019s what it means to be a friend.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Consider this thoughtful take:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Reciprocal self disclosure means that you have a group of people who collectively know you in a way you don&#8217;t even know yourself<span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span>who can see you without your skewed self perception &#8230; and you get to be in that support group for someone else. <a href=\"https:\/\/t.co\/YkQHELb0oc\">https:\/\/t.co\/YkQHELb0oc<\/a><\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Henry Eyring (@HenryEyring) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/HenryEyring\/status\/1598133750143266816?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">December 1, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I don\u2019t think it\u2019s a minor detail here that the link in the tweet is about how friendship matters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Action Plan for 2023. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I remember reading the research on new year\u2019s resolutions once: most tend to flop. The ones that succeed are not grand hopes or highly disciplined efforts, they\u2019re just changes to a daily routine. Don\u2019t aim to lose 20 pounds. Start the day with a ten-minute walk.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Here are my resolutions, then:<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When I read something that confirms my priors, I will read something that doesn\u2019t.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I will read (and perhaps subscribe to) something that is thoughtful and deliberate and on the other side of my biases and ideology.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll do a little better at thanking those who tell me the truth when I don\u2019t like it.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll vote for at least one person who I think is willing to say true things, even if it is politically costly, independent of their politics.<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I\u2019ll focus on friendship, even with those who disagree. In fact, especially with those who disagree. Seek to see through others\u2019 eyes.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s worth a shot. Here\u2019s a toast to 2023\u2013and to the truth-tellers who we so desperately need. May we be willing to hear them occasionally.
