{"id":15462,"date":"2022-08-12T12:42:25","date_gmt":"2022-08-12T18:42:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/?p=15462"},"modified":"2023-08-09T17:19:09","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T23:19:09","slug":"abuse-is-something-we-should-be-able-to-fight-together","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/sexuality-family\/sexual-abuse\/abuse-is-something-we-should-be-able-to-fight-together\/","title":{"rendered":"Abuse is Something We Should Be Able to Fight Together"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"notes\" style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:0.9em;\">Photo by Nathan Dumlao on Unsplash<\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Years ago, one of us participated in an effort to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/pubmed.ncbi.nlm.nih.gov\/18193351\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">study domestic violence coordinating councils<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in one region of Illinois. At one formative meeting, a coalition of conservative and liberal organizations decided to stop working together on domestic violence because of sharp differences around abortion\u2014along with a perception among some on the political right that domestic violence had become more of a \u201cliberal issue.\u201d\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In a world that struggles to find common ground about anything that matters, it\u2019s hard to imagine any issue that legitimately merits being called a\u00a0 universal common cause than the horror of family violence and child abuse. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">More than perhaps anything else, this<\/span> <span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">is something that anyone with an intact conscience ought to be able to rally around in support of. Like many, we\u2019ve wept this last week to hear about what these girls endured. Yet even basic unity around something like this remains remarkably elusive in our country today.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">On such an urgent and universally important issue, it\u2019s striking how much we struggle to extend the benefit of the doubt to others who say they care\u2014even though it\u2019s clear only monstrous souls could minimize the priority of abused children. That\u2019s precisely the insinuation and suspicion that hovers over our recent public conversations about the abuse story. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.sltrib.com\/opinion\/commentary\/2022\/08\/12\/brenton-erickson-gerardo-sumano\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">One new commentary<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> takes for granted that \u201cin some cases, the safety of \u2026 children might not be the church\u2019s top priority when it learns of child abuse.\u201d And in this week\u2019s Washington Post article on the Arizona abuse case, the sincerity of leaders in wanting to stop abuse is held skeptically throughout\u2014with readers invited to see the Church\u2019s efforts as primarily \u201cused to justify hushing up the young girl\u2019s rape.\u201d <div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>In a world that struggles to find common ground about anything that matters, it\u2019s hard to imagine any issue that legitimately merits being called a\u00a0 universal common cause than the horror of family violence and child abuse.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/span>Right after hinting at the possibility of many more abuse cases being covered up, the editorial team <a href=\"https:\/\/www.washingtonpost.com\/opinions\/2022\/08\/10\/mormon-church-child-sexual-abuse\/\">went on to state<\/a>, \u201cIn its response, the church insisted it regards abuse as inexcusable \u2026\u201d<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Was that really ever in doubt? Of course, it was\u2014and is\u2014among the many who have seemed strangely eager to embrace the popular narrative of helpline workers and church leaders alike callously prioritizing institutional well-being above that of vulnerable children.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">How, one might wonder, would it benefit the Church to cover up the rape of a child by a new convert? What exactly would the institutional advantage be to \u201cdivert abuse accusations away from\u201d police to lawyers, so they can \u201cbury the problem\u201d? But never mind this kind of nuance. For those who already see faith as intrinsically fraudulent, this is really too good of an accusation to fudge with all those questions. Let\u2019s just call anyone trying to think critically an \u201cabuse apologist\u201d and see if that quiets people down.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As a result, child sexual abuse now takes its place on the long list of crucial, even life-and-death questions, about which we have proven our skill at turning into culture war weapons rather than precious common causes to rally around together.\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Over the last week, rather than focusing on how to support the healing of the many who have tragically experienced such abuse (<a href=\"https:\/\/www.d2l.org\/child-sexual-abuse\/prevalence\/\">one in ten children<\/a> according to recent studies)\u2014or what explains the horrifying cruelty of some called to care for them in this world\u2014the public conversation has been almost single-mindedly focused on lawyers and a helpline.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There are obviously legitimate questions to ask, improvements to take seriously and failures to interrogate. But in our eagerness to explain and find blame in America, we have become remarkably quick to forget those most responsible for a tragedy. After a school shooting, we are again debating gun policy and first responder training. And after another revelation of horrifying abuse, we\u2019re now fixated on insinuations about \u201ccold-hearted\u201d policy and procedure.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We respect that some see this as precisely the right focus<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">how else are we to achieve \u201csystematic change\u201d? What is missed in such an emphasis, however, are the individual moral agents at the heart of these tragedies<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the men (and sometimes women) whose own choices are most directly responsible for unleashing a tsunami of pain. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If we were to have that latter conversation, it would remind every one of us about the central, eternal importance of our own individual actions and, yes, the interdependence of us all. It would also bring to the foreground realities of moral law, truth, sin, obedience, sacrifice, repentance, and God. By comparison, our prevailing public conversation does none of this<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">preoccupying us instead with not only procedural analysis but also with ruminations about possible misdeeds of anyone else surrounding the tragedy. In this way, the individual evil perpetrating the actual horror gets obscured as almost an afterthought.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Of course, those raising piercing accusations of cover-up against institutions like the Church of Jesus Christ see themselves as defending children too. And sometimes they really are, as widespread sexual abuse scandals in other faiths have demonstrated. But in this case, where no evidence has emerged of any widespread scandal, far less thought has gone to possible disadvantages to victims and children from rushing to conclusions so quickly. If there\u2019s a more complicated story at play and we miss that, we might endanger more kids than we save.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">For instance, those weaving a damning story about the Church as somehow a more dangerous place for vulnerable children are overlooking many established risk factors that say otherwise. Specifically, it\u2019s well-known that children are at <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/journals.sagepub.com\/doi\/abs\/10.1177\/088626086001001004\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">greater risk of sexual abuse<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When a child lives without one of the biological parents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the mother is unavailable to the child either as a result of employment outside the home<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the child reports that the parents&#8217; marriage is unhappy or conflictual<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the child reports having a poor relationship with the parents<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the child reports having a stepfather<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Fathers who <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/d1wqtxts1xzle7.cloudfront.net\/48662390\/s1359-1789_2800_2900023-920160907-12614-j7ymau-with-cover-page-v2.pdf?Expires=1660170777&amp;Signature=J49Mu9kxCBO4tYA6QOl00XcrsceRD7xolJWAcRkgSSTtMxEbiwrSW9yoNuomi2l7gXwmWTTFK-c~CrluYaApLh~pWvQ3Qmd8ORRxVOyovqGobJCNM6Q-1~YEWri0IF3y7MwcRsIgBNHNBuRnMGpQEkcQmac2ff8yP9c4iALbVl9OeaZsWmXOxwk2lQzM4z9bAMc-3aTuWkCTgXfP812gj4tIcCFROUxlPx9LDe14Utl1NNAO5ti3oqq01kezc~cA2ETylgR47YPX-iHMQ034DYJjcQWZoq21kovruJEGEIRLGNay23Scyw4xZ-iLN7GkTv~hYqhsEfkM5dT5HGAwHQ__&amp;Key-Pair-Id=APKAJLOHF5GGSLRBV4ZA\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">report loneliness and unhappiness<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> are also correlated with a higher risk of becoming an abuser\u2014as are, no doubt, those who compulsively use pornography.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Laying aside whatever personal feelings you have about religion, vulnerable children require us to recognize how <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">all of these <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">risk factors (<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.yourbrainonporn.com\/relevant-research-and-articles-about-the-studies\/critiques-of-questionable-debunking-propaganda-pieces\/religious-people-use-less-porn-and-are-no-more-likely-to-believe-they-are-addicted\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including pornography use<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">) are measurably less likely in religious communities like The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t mean there weren&#8217;t serious mistakes in this particular case or that faith communities don\u2019t generally have things to work on. For all their benefits in offering rapid support, tight-knit communities can sometimes present unique barriers to accountability\u2014wanting to \u201cavoid contention,\u201d \u201cnot be nosy,\u201d and \u201cnot disrupt someone else\u2019s sacred marriage.\u201d Sometimes a laudable desire to believe the best about people can also <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/unthinkable.cc\/wp-content\/uploads\/2017\/12\/Hess_Allen_Todd2011Community_Accountability.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">get in the way<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> of our ability to intervene when it\u2019s sorely needed (\u201coh, he seems like such a great guy\u201d.) <div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>Are we committed enough to eradicating abuse that we\u2019re willing to put down our swords against each other? <\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/span>We need to keep improving in these areas\u2014especially when crucial balances must be struck. While some have popularly insisted, \u201cThis is not that hard [just stop the abuse!]\u201d\u2014the dynamics involved in family violence are more complicated than many imagine. The truth is, we know very little about what the bishop(s) were thinking or why they made the decisions they did. There are many unanswered questions. It seems clear that there were severe failings in their efforts to minister to this family, which surely are heartbreaking to them in retrospect. But from court transcripts, it seems clear the bishops did <i>not <\/i>know the full extent of the abuse. And we also know that bishops, like journalists, must sometimes balance the competing priorities of having enough confidentiality that the truth can be discovered while ensuring there is justice and safety for those affected by what\u2019s discovered.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In response to <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/editorials\/are-reported-sexual-abuse-cases-exceptional-or-illustrative-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">our own efforts to provide further context<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, some have wondered: When someone has been hurt so deeply and profoundly, how can we do anything other than rage against anyone involved?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">While understanding the impulse, we reiterate tha<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">t tragedy means we need to<\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> think more,<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> not less<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">especially if we\u2019re serious about doing all we can to make things better. Are we? Honest question: Are we committed enough to eradicating abuse that we\u2019re willing to put down our swords against each other?\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Certainly, our sorrow would be far greater if we believed these cases were somehow representative and illustrative of church callousness and self-interest at the heart of an entire system, as the original AP article implies.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As we <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/editorials\/are-reported-sexual-abuse-cases-exceptional-or-illustrative-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">attempted to demonstrate<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last week, that\u2019s simply not fair or true. As illustrated by <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2022\/8\/5\/23292405\/i-survived-abuse-church-help-line-ap-story-broke-my-heart-latter-day-saints-associated-press-mormon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">people who have worked on the helpline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, this has been staffed by men and women earnestly seeking to help children. We ourselves have spoken with those who have worked as attorneys and counselors for the helpline. This is a 24 hours a day, seven days a week service provided by people who care and understand<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and who, in some cases, are survivors themselves. To assume their first priority isn\u2019t as stated, to \u201cassist victims and help protect them from further abuse, help protect potential victims, and comply with legal requirements for reporting abuse\u201d is a slap in the face.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It also requires ignoring enormous evidence to the contrary in its collective Christian ministry across many decades to believe the sponsoring church and leadership aren\u2019t sincere in their condemnation of these heinous acts of abuse. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/newsroom.churchofjesuschrist.org\/article\/church-offers-statement-help-line-abuse\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As it said in an official response<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">:<\/span><\/p>\n<blockquote><p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">The abuse of a child or any other individual is inexcusable. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints believes this, teaches this, and dedicates tremendous resources and efforts to prevent, report, and address abuse. Our hearts break for these children and all victims of abuse.<\/span><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Speaking for all members of the Church, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2022\/04\/24kearon?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elder Patrick Kearon said<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in our most recent conference said that if you have experienced abuse in the past, \u201cwe weep with you.\u201d And \u201cwe yearn for you to overcome the confusion, shame, and fear\u201d and to find healing in Christ.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s that healing for all victims that must be our top priority, along with protecting anyone else from experiencing these ravages. In that sense, a thoughtful reappraisal of systemic and institutional support seems surely justified. But who does it help to insist the evidence points toward system-wide evil?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even if we were to take a self-interested angle, once again, the Church actually has very little incentive to cover up abuse among congregants (as opposed to abuse committed by leaders). So <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">even in this painful moment, <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we believe in a church that can\u2019t protect everyone but sincerely tries to do so.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">In the end, some <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2022\/8\/5\/23292405\/i-survived-abuse-church-help-line-ap-story-broke-my-heart-latter-day-saints-associated-press-mormon\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">have wondered<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.fairlatterdaysaints.org\/blog\/2022\/08\/06\/reflections-on-abuse-reporting-and-the-church\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the Church\u2019s abuse helpline<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> does ultimately <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/editorials\/are-reported-sexual-abuse-cases-exceptional-or-illustrative-of-the-church-of-jesus-christ\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">help children or not<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">. One of the risks in cases like this is that we become so outraged that we end up throwing out procedures that were working well and end up making the situation much worse than it was.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">But even if the helpline is a net positive, they didn\u2019t save these two children. And those two are infinitely important.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Let\u2019s continue praying for their healing and future happiness<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> and put heart and soul into doing absolutely everything we can as a community to prevent such sickening evil within <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">any <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">family in our midst <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">or<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> anywhere around us.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Heaven knows, not until such suffering is eradicated will Zion truly be built among us. <\/span><\/p>\n<div class=\"bottom-notes\" style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:0.9em;\">Due to World Table going out of business, our comment feature is not currently available.  <\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Few issues hold as much universal importance as child abuse.
