{"id":11405,"date":"2022-04-26T16:36:46","date_gmt":"2022-04-26T22:36:46","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/?p=11405"},"modified":"2023-08-09T11:33:35","modified_gmt":"2023-08-09T17:33:35","slug":"happy-rejoining-twitter-day","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/media-education\/happy-rejoining-twitter-day\/","title":{"rendered":"Happy Rejoining Twitter Day"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"notes\" style=\"font-style: italic;font-size:0.9em;\">A condensed version of this was published April 26, 2022 <a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/2022\/4\/26\/23042752\/perspective-happy-rejoining-twitter-day-if-youre-celebrating-elon-musk-social-media\">in the Deseret News. <\/a><\/div>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When the news broke late yesterday that Elon Musk had successfully acquired Twitter, the reaction among many was predictably dire. <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Hofstra University associate professor Kara Alaimo, for instance, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/25\/opinions\/twitter-musk-takeover-internet-alaimo\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">forecast on CNN<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that the Twitter sale \u201cmay be the death knell for the social media platform.\u201d And u<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">nder the ominous headline, \u201cTwitter Under Elon Musk Will Be a Scary Place,\u201d <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/25\/opinion\/editorials\/twitter-elon-musk.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Greg Bensinger suggested<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that when Musk insists Twitter be an \u201cinclusive arena for free speech,\u201d what he <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">really <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">means is \u201cfree speech for people like Mr. Musk.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">This New York Times editorial board member went on to portray Twitter\u2019s new owner as a paragon of racism, sexism, and wealth\u2014with Dr. Alaimo further speculating that <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">public figures \u201cwon\u2019t want to be associated\u201d with a platform that isn&#8217;t \u201cinclusive\u201d and which is known to spread \u201cquestionable\u201d content.\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">These are precisely the concerns, of course, which have motivated well-intentioned efforts over recent years<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/media-education\/a-short-history-of-social-media-bans\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">accelerated since the election of President Trump<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">to use moderation on social media platforms to encourage people to have <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">the right <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">kinds of conversations.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">About the election. About the pandemic. About sexuality and gender. About climate change.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If only we could help people embrace the <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">right <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">information and \u201cdiligently combat misinformation\u201d<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">so the argument goes<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">then we could ensure people (and society as a whole) would be moving forward in \u201chealthy\u201d and \u201csafe\u201d ways. <div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>As people of faith have fled social media in record numbers, they\u2019ve also made it an even more barren landscape intellectually and spiritually.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div>I<\/span>t\u2019s understandable that many found this line of thinking comforting and reassuring, especially amidst the political, social, and health turmoil of recent years. But equal numbers have found it all a bit creepy, prompting some of us to crack open <i>Brave New World<\/i> or <i>1984 <\/i>for the first time since high school.<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">There\u2019s nothing wrong with strongly advocating one\u2019s convictions about truth to all the world<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">an unabashed specialty of Christians everywhere. But when any particular view gets enshrined in a state or other corporate or media entity with the power to dictate thought and action for millions of lives, that\u2019s a whole \u2018nother story.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Which is why many of us see news of Twitter\u2019s new ownership as something to celebrate, not a sign of impending doom, and why some people who had left the platform wasted no time in returning.<\/p>\n<blockquote class=\"twitter-tweet\">\n<p dir=\"ltr\" lang=\"en\">Thanks to new ownership, I\u2019ve decided to come back! ?<\/p>\n<p>\u2014 Mark R. Levin (@marklevinshow) <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/marklevinshow\/status\/1518694569780654080?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw\">April 25, 2022<\/a><\/p><\/blockquote>\n<p><script async src=\"https:\/\/platform.twitter.com\/widgets.js\" charset=\"utf-8\"><\/script><\/p>\n<p><b>New opportunities for voices of faith online<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u00a0 In recent years, many millions of right-leaning and religiously-oriented Americans have admittedly given up on social media. Completely.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Rarely a week goes by that I don\u2019t hear of some other friend bragging about deleting all their social media accounts. And can you really blame them?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">From rampant animosity to mounting censorship to creeping pornography, online social engagement presented lots of risks<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">and seemingly few benefits. Yet ironically, as people of faith have fled social media in record numbers, they\u2019ve also made it an even more barren landscape intellectually and spiritually.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Perhaps it <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">isn\u2019t <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">yet time to flee into our ideological bomb shelters? Indeed, in this very moment in time where blue checks on Twitter <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/watch?v=IfqXz-6Wqic\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">threaten a mass exodus<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, could it be time for normal Americans to move in the opposite direction<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reclaiming ground they had been ceding in <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201cthe new public square for discourse and engagement<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">,\u201d as <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Utah state senators Stuart Adams and Mike McKell <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.deseret.com\/opinion\/2021\/3\/2\/22310510\/utah-legislature-social-media-censorship-big-tech-poses-a-major-threat-to-free-speech\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">called social media in these pages<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> last year?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I sure think so. And I\u2019m definitely not the only one encouraging you to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/media-education\/stop-deleting-your-facebook\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">stop deleting your Facebook<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (and Twitter).<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Referring to the \u201csmall trickle\u201d of efforts to communicate hopeful messages through social media, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/prophets-and-apostles\/unto-all-the-world\/to-sweep-the-earth-as-with-a-flood?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elder David A. Bednar encouraged<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> an audience of Latter-day Saints in 2014 to \u201chelp transform that trickle into a flood\u201d in a way that could \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">sweep the earth with messages filled with righteousness and truth\u2014messages that are authentic, edifying, and praiseworthy<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Such counsel echoes the earlier wisdom of <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Supreme Court Justice Louis Brandeis, who wrote in 1927 that when a need arises to \u201cexpose \u2026 falsehood and fallacies\u201d or \u201cavert the evil\u201d around us, \u201cthe remedy to be applied is more speech, not enforced silence.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">It\u2019s not just Christians, of course, who have things of great worth to share with the world.\u00a0 Imagine what would happen if <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/editorials\/why-persuasion-shouldnt-be-a-dirty-word\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">everyone had a chance to share<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> what they found to be good, true, and beautiful with the world. What a world that would be!\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><b>Sensible social media concerns. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">We don\u2019t, of course, live in an Edenic intellectual world where everyone opening their mouth has something beautiful to share. And in that, we should take seriously <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/2022\/04\/25\/opinion\/editorials\/twitter-elon-musk.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">reminders<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Twitter has never been a place for rational, nuanced speech<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d and <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.cnn.com\/2022\/04\/25\/opinions\/twitter-musk-takeover-internet-alaimo\/index.html\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cautions<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about inadvertently \u201csilencing many people\u201d and pushing away \u201cthoughtful users\u201d who \u201caren&#8217;t going to voluntarily keep using a platform on which they&#8217;re bombarded with abuse.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Clearly, some kind of healthy moderation will always be helpful anywhere ideas are exchanged<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">be that online or in person. But no amount of policing can replace our own collective exercise of virtuous exchange<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">including both practiced civility and decency in our sharing, and enough humility and curiosity to listen as others do the same.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yet this is more<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">not less<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">important in a time when our civic atmosphere becomes especially strained and harsh.\u00a0 What better time for voices of peace and kindness to be heard?\u00a0 <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Near the chaotic and anguished beginning of the pandemic, <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/general-conference\/2020\/04\/45nelson?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">President Russell Nelson taught<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> that light can \u201cshine ever brighter\u201d precisely amidst \u201cthe increasing darkness that accompanies tribulation.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Throughout virtually all of human history, that sharing of goodness has happened personally\u2014 one by one.\u00a0 House by house.\u00a0 And door by door.\u00a0 Occasionally in a synagogue\u2014or perhaps standing on a wall in a city.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">What would these ancient teachers have thought about possibly standing up on a Facebook wall?\u00a0 Would they have scoffed and turned away in disgust at the vitriol that some people post back in response?\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arrows certainly <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/hel\/16?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">didn\u2019t stop them<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in real life\u2014continuing to share <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/study\/scriptures\/bofm\/alma\/26?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">despite being<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> \u201c<\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">cast out, and mocked, and spit upon, and smote upon our cheeks.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Will rhetorical threats stop <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">us <\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">from sharing our hearts?\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">I hope not.\u00a0 Because the risks of sharing goodness are worth it. That experience of being able to bring uplift and encouragement into someone else\u2019s life is worth whatever cost.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">None of this, of course, means <\/span><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">we need to become \u201csocial media experts or fanatics\u201d as <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.churchofjesuschrist.org\/prophets-and-apostles\/unto-all-the-world\/to-sweep-the-earth-as-with-a-flood?lang=eng\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Elder Bednar later cautioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014adding, \u201cwe do not need to spend inordinate amounts of time creating and disseminating elaborate messages.\u201d <div class=\"perfect-pullquote vcard pullquote-align-right pullquote-border-placement-left\"><blockquote><p>Imagine what would happen if <a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/editorials\/why-persuasion-shouldnt-be-a-dirty-word\/\">everyone had a chance to share<\/a> what they found to be good, true, and beautiful with the world.<\/p><\/blockquote><\/div><\/span>It\u2019s also true that the addictive, entertaining elements of social media <i>have <\/i>threatened to eclipse meaningful activities in people\u2019s lives.\u00a0 If you are one of the many, who open social media first thing in the morning\u2014as soon as they turn off their mobile alarm\u2014before they even get out of bed, maybe think more about the proper time and place to engage in social media. Ask yourself who you want your first interactions of the day\u2014and last interactions at night\u2014to be?<\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are one of the many with an unhealthy relationship with social media, by all means, take a <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.thechurchnews.com\/living-faith\/2018-06-06\/experts-weigh-in-on-why-you-should-accept-president-nelsons-challenge-and-offer-tips-for-success-10930\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">detox, a fast, a vacation<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> for as long as you need. If you\u2019re one for whom social media has fed unhealthy obsessions or cravings\u2014even tempting you to initiate toxic relationships\u2014put in place strict safeguards, perhaps a joint account with someone else you trust and love. If you\u2019re one for whom social media has become a nexus of toxic social comparison\u2014and a regular way to \u201cgrind down\u201d your own self-esteem\u2014use this as an opportunity to step back and consider seriously what and where your worth comes from.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Yes, the risks and dangers of social media are real\u2014especially in excessive, unbounded, unguided ways. <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/publicsquaremag.org\/covering-the-coverage\/media-reaches-for-easy-hits-on-high-councilors-arrest\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Christopher Cunningham once cautioned<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> about the strong pull of our surrounding culture to make \u201cpeeping Toms\u201d of all of us, as we look in on people\u2019s lives with obsessive fascination\u2014alternatively craving aspects of someone else\u2019s lives and then \u201creveling in another person\u2019s sin, crimes, escapades, or misery.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">That doesn\u2019t have to be how we act though!\u00a0 Because we can also choose to \u201c<\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/biblehub.com\/kjv\/1_corinthians\/13-6.htm\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">rejoice not in iniquity<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u201d (wrong-doing, injustice, sin, evil),\u201d and to instead \u201crejoice in the truth.\u201d\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">A truth so precious that it\u2019s worth every sacrifice to share, with anyone who will listen.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Anywhere.\u00a0 Including online.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Even in 280 characters.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p>___________________<\/p>\n<p><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0We gathered seven tips for \u201chealthier social media engagement\u201d last year as a magazine, copied below:\u00a0\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/i><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Careful boundaries.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Be conscientious of the time and place you engage in something like Facebook:\u00a0 Not at work, school, or Church.\u00a0 Not when around children.\u00a0 And not right before bed\u2014or first thing in the morning. Fight (hard) to preserve times in which your attention is needed for present commitments and people.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Be proactive more than reactive.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Rather than spending your time on Facebook just reacting to what others say, consider planning out (and maybe writing out) what you want to share before even going on the platform, as well as individuals you want to contact <\/span><i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">first<\/span><\/i><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u2014before scrolling any news or messages that have come in.\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Healthy expectations of response.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> Don\u2019t impose on yourself unrealistic expectations of responding to every message or response that comes.\u00a0 While doing your best to listen to what others are saying, it\u2019s not necessary to respond, address, validate, and moderate everything that happens. So, don\u2019t try!\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Don\u2019t take disagreement personally. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">When someone shares another perspective (or even a critique of what you\u2019ve said), practice taking a breath and \u201csitting with the discomfort\u201d in a way that lets you hear what they are trying to say.\u00a0 Is there anything in what they are sharing that you can appreciate or validate?\u00a0 Start there.\u00a0 If you choose to respond, thank them for being willing to share another perspective, and point out what you find helpful about it.\u00a0 Then share, even just briefly, what else their thought brings to mind. (If a back-and-forth ensues, remember you can choose to follow it further if it\u2019s helpful\u2014or move on, and not feel pressured to continue it.)\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Block toxic voices anytime you need. <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If someone shows up not interested in real conversation, and (clearly) only wanting to attack, don\u2019t feel bad about blocking them from your page.\u00a0 You can also choose to hide their posts but stay friends. Be careful not to over-interpret honest disagreement as an \u201cattack.\u201d This is about protecting your page from haters\u2014not manicuring it towards ideological uniformity.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"1\"><b>Embrace pluralism and healthy contestation.<\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">\u00a0 Embrace the pluralism of our public spaces\u2014and commit to be a part of it, however challenging, scary, and exhilarating it can all be.\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li><b>Take regular social media sabbaths, vacations, and daily pauses.\u00a0 <\/b><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Once a week, we have found it helpful to take a complete and total break from social media for a full day (like Sunday)\u2014along with similar breaks on a daily basis.\u00a0 Try to reserve first thing in the morning or the last thing at night\u2014the bookends of your day\u2014for the people most important in your life, including God.<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<hr \/>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>For all those keeping social media at arm\u2019s length, maybe today\u2019s a chance to take a second look?
